Wrestler Babita Phogat moves HC to claim DSP’s post in Harayana

Chandigarh:

Renowned wrestler Babita Phogat, daughter of Dangal fame wrestling coach Mahavir Phogat, has approached the Punjab and Haryana high court and sought directions to promote her as deputy superintendent of police (DSP) in the Haryana police under sports quota.

Babita (29), who at present is a sub-inspector in Haryana police, has sought promotion citing the case of her elder sister Geeta Phogat who was appointed DSP in the Haryana police by the state government in 2016 following the court’s intervention.

Babita was appointed a sub-inspector in Haryana police under sports quota in 2013 by the then Bhupinder Singh Hooda-led Congress government. Her sister Geeta was also appointed an inspector in Haryana police before she was promoted as DSP in October 2016 by the Manohar Lal Khattar-led BJP government.

Babita had won a silver medal in 2010 Commonwealth Games held in New Delhi. She won gold medals in 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games and 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

On her plea, Justice Ritu Bahri of the HC has issued notice to the secretary of Haryana’s department of sports and youth affairs and sought response on the contentions raised in Babita’s plea. The matter would now come up for hearing on May 9.
